Ned was right, we make it to town as the sun is reaching its midpoint in the vast blue cloudless sky. As we stride through the start of town, a big wooden sign says Jerik in black burned letters. Our town didn’t have a sign, but then again, our town was hidden, I guess there’s not much hiding in the desert. I dismount Raven at the sign and pull my sword from its sheath. My bow won’t be much help in a close-quarters place like a town.

The road, if you can call it that, is red dirt just like the rest of the desert, the only thing distinguishing it as a road is it’s more compact than the rest of the dirt around us. The houses run alongside both sides of the road, but these ones aren’t made of wood, like ours were.

These houses are built in a way I’ve never seen before. It looks like people made their houses out of mud bricks. I run my hand down the side of the first house and when I pull my hand back, it's covered in red dust.

“The people who lived here live in Sanctuary now. They said the bricks helped keep out the heat. Let’s find a house and wait out the sun. We can search for supplies when it cools down a little,” Ned says from where he stands next to a house in front of me across the road. He opens the door he’s standing by and strides right in, sword lifted, ready to fight if necessary. My eyes widen and I glance over at Raven, she tilts her head and shrugs her shoulders before following him in.

I move to follow her, but Allister says behind me, “I think I’m gonna stay in the house across the street. Just make sure you come get me when you want to search for supplies?”

“Sure,” I say as I turn around and gaze at him. He’s dropped his satchel at his feet, has his arms crossed over his chest, and he's biting his lower lip, like he’s insecure. That’s strange for him, he’s usually secure in himself and so cocky.

“Are you okay? You’re not being your usual cocky self.” I feel his insecurity leech to me and I lift my hand to my necklace.

“Just don’t leave me, okay?” His face droops, making his eyes appear so forlorn.

My face softens as I motion to the open door behind me. “You can come in here with us if you’re worried about it.”

Allister uncrosses his arms and begins picking at his fingernails. “No, I don’t think that would go over very well. No one in there likes me much, and at least this way we can all get a break from each other. Besides, that’s a seriously small house for all of us to hang out in together, I don’t know if my ego would fit in there with everyone else.”

I turn my head and really look at the house. He’s right it can't be more than a one-room house.
